Galveston Little Leagues merge into one, as West Isle and Island unite

GALVESTON -- West Isle Little League (West Isle) and Island Little League (Island) will merge into one entity upon completion of the 2022 season.

According to the agreement letter signed by authorized representatives of both leagues, West Isle and Island have adopted a resolution calling for the establishment of a new, chartered league in Galveston County.

“A single league will undoubtedly provide the best opportunities for the children of Galveston,” said Erik Carner, president of West Isle board of directors.

The decision process involved community input, feedback from parents and coaches, discussions with District management, and an in-favor vote from both boards.

"Now we can bring the whole city together and provide a better baseball experience for the kids," said Blanca Flores, president of Island board of directors.

West Isle and Island have formed a special committee comprised of three members from both leagues to negotiate the terms. Erik Carner, Chris Brownlee and Dave Spence will represent West Isle, and Blanca Flores, Rosemary Treviño and Mike Dean will represent Island.

Carner said decisions have not yet been made as far as how the teams will be blended, how the coaches will be assigned or where the games will be played. He said the committee hopes to have many of those details ironed out in time for a player and parent meeting in November.

For the current season, West Isle and Island are working together to determine the need and logistics for interleague play, based solely on the players’ best interests.

“Everyone involved in the merge process genuinely cares about Little League. We will do our best to make this go as smooth as possible,” said Chris Brownlee, vice president of West Isle board of directors.

The merge committee will be reaching out to the community for input during this transition period.
